Eye Opener - Facts about Edible Oil

Hi Friends,
Would encourage you to use only a wood pressed oil (a,k,a, cold pressed oil) as edible oil for the following reasons.

One day on the internet I was just helping my son to get some information about the pollution. While surfing somehow I came across one interesting link regarding food adulteration. I was horrified to see that the information was regarding the adulteration done in the edible oils especially in India.
Would highlight some of the info on these links. If more interested you can go through these links mentioned in the references section of this article.

  • Groundnut cost in India is approx. inr 80/- per kg. It takes 2.5Kg of groundnut to extract 1 litre oil if you use a plain oil extraction method. However the commercial oil is available at inr 140/- per litre. Stumbled...? How come is this possible..?? Let's say even if the wholesale rate of groundnut is inr 50/- per kg. , still the oil price is not justified if you do a simple maths. This is because of the oil adulteration. (Some people may say that the byproduct or the cake remained while extracting the oil is sold. But still looking at the other overheads such as packaging, electricity, labour there's  a mismatch between the cost of the raw material and the selling price of oil and cake).
  •  A mineral oil (also sometimes referred to as 'paraffin liquid') is a major contributor of this adulteration. This oil is imported in India in abundance and at a dirt cheap rate.
  • There is no evidence of ailment found because of mineral oil being added to the edible oil, although the sources say that its derivatives contain carcinogen (cancer causing) materials.
  • It is well known fact that there is a huge gap between supply and demand as far as pure, natural oil production and consumption is concerned because of the size of population. However anything that could be harmful to health should never be supported.
  • Broadly, there are three qualities of edible oils getting produced.
    1. Very High Quality - produced on wooden machines (cold pressed oil) where all the nutrient, proteins are intact in the oil. No preservatives are added.
    2. Medium Quality - produced on metal machines where the nutrient, proteins may get lost because of the high temperature. However at least there is no adulteration, no preservatives addition.
    3. Low Quality - produced on metal machines where the nutrient, proteins are lost because of the high temperature around 250 degrees celsius. Also the processing is carried out which includes the addition of preservatives to increase the shelf life.                                            References -
